Nature vs Greed – Take Action for Wild Salmon!
For decades, we have been fighting for free-flowing rivers and the protection of wild fish stocks. The last decade it’s become clear that the aggressive expansion of the Norwegian fish farming industry is the greatest threat to our remaining wild salmon stocks.
Experts in the international scientific salmon research community all agree that fish farming contributes to genetic pollution, fjord systems heavily infested with sea lice where few or any smolt survive, and an increasing rate of disease spreading into wild ecosystems. We have warned you before! And now it’s becoming more and more obvious, the time is running out for our wild salmon stocks.
Due to alarming low runs of salmon, Norweg...

Pattern of the Month - #53 Thunder Pig
This fly inherits its magical colour combination from the classic Thunder & Lightning-an exceptionally effective blend of discrete colours. During pattern trials, the Thunder Pig caught fish when more traditional flies failed. It’s a must-have in our boxes, especially for those days when the river carries a peaty hue. Pattern of the Month #52 - Stealth Samurai
A superb fly for fast water and gin-clear rivers. The trick to making the fly vanish in the clear water, combined with the greyish hackles, produces a camouflaged, living, swimming fly that has proven effective worldwide for many years. We love this fly for Iceland and the Norwegian west coast clear rivers. We believe it's best fished fast across the current, almost invisible and very seductive...
Pattern of the Month #51 - Nasty Rusty Flash Wing
The Nasty Rusty Flash Wing features our favourite colour combination. This copper fly glitters in shades ranging from warm green to deep burgundy red. The broad spectrum gives it a fantastic shine and an appearance that suits any river with some colour. When the early season river starts to clear up, the Nasty Rusty Flash Wing is a great choice. Tied on the super light BTT, it's ideal for a hea...

Over the years, Mikael has been at the forefront of innovative tying techniques and materials. In our 50th Pattern of the Month film, he introduces a new and exciting method for creating durable spey hackles using Nutria fibers. Pattern of the Month #49 - Classic Durham Ranger
This classic fly holds a special place in Mikael's heart as one of his earliest favourites. The beautifully composed body reflects the artistry of the Victorian era. Its unique appearance, featuring a wing of golden pheasant tippet feathers, has been modernised with a tapered, soft swimming hair wing, delicately striped with a marker pen. Simple yet enchanting, this fly exudes a certain magic, ...
Bolstad Opening 2023 - Perseverance Pays Off
Join us on the opening days of one of the most classic rivers of all time - the mighty Vosso. The lower stretch is home to more stories about battles with giant fish than maybe anywhere else; the Bolstad beat. A fish wasn't considered truly big until it tipped the scales at 60 lbs, with 40 and 50 lbs catches being a regular occurrence, and even some enormous salmon exceeding 70 lbs. Though the ...
Pattern of the Month #48 - Akroyd Spey
This is one of Mikael’s absolute favourites among the old classic Spey and Dee flies. Already in the early 80s, he had good catches on both Dee strip-winged versions and this one, with a little cinnamon-colored hair wing tied in flat over the mobile heron-hackled body. This classic fly features humus colours, and perhaps that’s one of the reasons it's been so effective on our Baltic rivers and ...
River Ljungan - Home of the Big Baltic Salmon

Join us on a trip to the majestic Ljungan River, meeting the Baltic sea just south of the small town of Sundsvall; the river is renowned for hosting some of the largest Baltic salmon. While its lower reaches flow wild and untamed, further upstream, the landscape is wrecked by a daunting dam, halting the migration of wild fish. Despite extensive restoration projects, the lower section remains th...
Pattern of the Month #47 - Mikkeli Blue Flash Wing
Flash wings have gained increasing popularity in recent years. Mikael tied his first flash wing for Gaulfossen back in the early 80’s. This new design is elevated by a stiff underwing that effectively holds the flash away from the hook. The innovative SSS Flash blend, combined with the new Glitz Dubbing Brush, makes tying exceptionally easy. To add motion, ostrich hackles are tied in front of t...
Pattern of the Month #46 - Nasty Banana Pig

This little Pig has proven to be a truly effective fly for big fish. Many have watched Mikael & Håkan's unique adventure with the great 55 lbs salmon at Steinfossen that fell for a fly like this. I have spent my last summer in Norwegian Finnmark searching for a dream...because everything it's over now. If I look this actual catastrophic situation, I'm happy because scandinavian fishermen are the last genetic group who never had thought to practise catch&release policy. I never had seen someone of them to release a fish! I felt me like an Ufo along their rivers. I'm really sad because they have the best rivers in the world for salmon fishing, now completely destroyed for the facts that we know very well. I hope that their wealthy system collapse very soon for their stupid blindness vs. wild stocks protection. Money are devil's children...like ever.

I been living in Oslo almost 20 years now. And before like 10 years ago you could get a great sea-trout at Oslo fjord , now it’s almost totally dead not even cod anymore. And nobody is concerned about it, but buying new electrical cars like crazy thinking that they gonna save something this way. I was shocked when they closed rivers this summer, am even considering to quit fishing. I immigrated from Baltic countries to Norway hopping for less corruption and so on but Jesus what am seeing here is just unbelievable. The thing is that Norway as almost any other country has big problems with some kinda retardant politicians. Any way keep pushing Frødin!💪🏻

Just this past few weeks here in NW Ireland we have had an estimated 30,000-40,000 escaped farm fish from one establishment in Killary Fjord.......compounded by the fact the owners refused to notify authorities in a timely manner. This can have a devastating affect on some EXTREMELY fragile small spate fisheries for a long distance north and south of the escape. Unfortunately, the relevant government people are incompetent and more importantly the statutory body with responsibility, IFI, are truly and UTTERLY incompetent at ALL things apart from harassing normal recreational fly fisherman it would seem. Ohhhhhh the joys 🤦🤦🤦🤦😡

I absolutely agree with you, all consumers should boycott a fish that must be considered as a junk food because it threatens the balance of an entire ecosystem. It is only a matter of marketing, job opportunities and big money against the wild salmon that exists since thousands years and this one could disappear because of this silly human greed. So bad. You can find farmed salmon on daily menus on almost all restaurants, like pork, chicken, etc. You can have it everywhere. A true product from the food industry, that you are right, must be boycotted. I personally don’t eat it, and so my family, since years. You did a great job with this video and believe me you did it right. We must fight not only for the wild salmon but for all these wild places that are so unique! Let’s keep up the fight, THE WILD salmon deserve it!!

A great video Mikael, there is no place for open water salmon farming in these times and as you say there are other options. Personally I have not killed a salmon in over 25 years and believe it should be made illegal until such times that the species recovers. I have mailed the authorities in Sweden, Norway and Scotland and will continue to ensure that my friends, colleagues and family know the truth about the plight of our wild salmon and that they are being driven to extinction by the greed of salmon farming businesses and our governments by granting licences to them. Keep up the good fight, let’s hope it’s not too late when they eventually listen.

If you want people to support the end of open pen salmon farming you need to do a better job of explaining why it is so detrimental to the wild stocks. You did a bad job of explaining that. It really didn't sound that bad. More like you just don't like it.

    • @frodinflies

Dear Jamie - the purpose of this little film was not to explain why open pen fish farming is the biggest threat to our wild salmon stocks. That we have done in many films and text over the years. In fact we think that all conserned anglers following also the scientific salmon fishing community knows this is a fact. The purpose of this film was to engage people to take action for the fast declining stocks of wild salmon. To demand change so we can save this specie for future generations.

So you lost me when you got to c&r ! some rivers need it some do not. More fish on spawning beds does not equal more salmon ,in fact the opposite can be true . If you are going to promote c&r then lets see the facts ? and please do not give the old "more fish to spawn argument " it does not wash anymore ,there is a not a single argument i can see for catch an release in healthy rives ,if the salmon population is so small on certain rivers close them ! If you want to really protect all wild salmon stop putting a hook in them ! the river Dee has had total c&r for what 25 years ,you see any improvement ? because i do not but i do see the tackle industry and river owners happy to see fish caught multiple times ,you talk about greed ,its not just the salmon farmers who are greedy ,is it .

I totally agree. We have the same problem in Scotland. The Scottish government have just allowed the fish farm companies to remove the word " farmed " from the front of packets of Salmon. The general public are now being duped. I tell everyone not to eat this . The environmental damage caused is off the scale. The government are looking away because farmed Salmon is Scotlands number 1 food export. It makes them too much money!

Hej Mikael!
